The 2012 AMA Supercross season has kicked off to a good start and Spider Energy Drink was there to support our official team rider #314 Alex Ray. During the season opener on January 6th Alex qualified in the 450 class and advanced to the “night show”

It was there where Alex raced in heat #2, and as a result of a crash broke his right pinkie.  But that didn’t stop Alex as he got back on his bike and raced in the “Last Chance Qualifier” where he was ultimately eliminated from racing the main event.

This past week Alex was fitted with a special riding glove to mobilize his finger and what a difference that has made. Team trainer Bryan McDonald said “Alex has been riding some of the best I have seen, and in fact not only did he brake his finger, I think he may have even broken his fastest time ever” One thing we know for sure is that Alex is dedicated to success and nothing like a broken finger is going to slow him up.

The next SX event will take place in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, January 13 at Bank One Ball Park where Alex will do what he does best and ride with heart and soul. Give it up for A-Ray!

The upcoming 2012 season of AMA Supercross promises to be an eventful year and Spider Energy Drink is excited to announce the title sponsorship of Alex Ray #314 who will be riding a Honda 450 for team Spider Energy. Alex who debuted in Supercross this past season has been training the past 7 weeks in Lincoln, Nebraska under the leadership of Bryan McDonald. When Alex arrived in Lincoln for training his first lap time was 58.34 and after breaking down the track his fastest lap time was 53.83. Alex spent his Thanksgiving holiday back home in Tennessee, however while at home he was training at yet another MX camp. Alex will soon be in California gearing up for the kick-off of the 2012 season, which begins in Anaheim, California on Saturday, January 7, 2012. We are excited to have Alex as our rider this year and we are looking forward to an exciting 2012 season. The bike’s graphics kit is super sick and there is no doubt that Alex will get the Spider Energy Drink brand in front of our core consumer.

The introduction of the Spider Energy Drink 99 cent cans has proven to be a great move for the company. In a world dominated by three major players most energy drinks find themselves spending way too much time and money trying to compete with brands that are very well rooted in the category. Consumers are not willing to try another brand if there is really no reason to spring the same price for something they might not like.

Over the years consumers tried so many cheap imitations and knock off’s that they simply got disgusted. So why do so many brands keep following a path of distruction? We found out fast…If you want to play in the game you need to either fork out some serious cash (more than even the big soft drink companies are willing to do), or you have to offer a killer product at a killer price! The Spider Energy logo on his car might be small, but the BITE is BIG! Kyle Mohan is showing great advancement in the sport of Drift Racing. Below is the recent press release where Mohan advances and moves to 10th in Formula Drift Pro Championship. Way to go Kyle!

July 27, 2011 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – Evergreen Speedway, located just east of Seattle, Washington, has been a tough venue for Kyle Mohan ever since he began competing in his Mazda RX-8. On one previous occasion, in 2008 – way back when Formula Drift only had top-16 tandem – Mohan made the show and faced series champion Tanner Foust in the first round.

His Mazda RX-8 faced an early exit in 2009 and 2010, but Mohan set that right this weekend by advancing to the Great Eight. His result means the Nexen / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8 is the only non V8-powered car in the top ten of the Formula Drift championship standings.

Mohan missed his mark in both qualifying runs, ending up with a score good only for 22nd which would mean he would face Michael Essa in his unique BMW Z4 in the top-32. Mohan defeated Essa to make the top-16 when Essa lost drift during his chase run.

The top-16 saw Mohan face off against fellow Nexen Tire driver Cyrus Martinez, making his first appearance ever in the top-16. Martinez, struggling to match Mohan’s high and fast line against the Evergreen Speedway wall, drove into the side of Mohan’s RX-8, causing steering rack and bodywork damage – as well as giving Mohan the win.

“Finally, we got a great result in Seattle,” said Mohan afterwards. “The car was great all weekend, and the guys got our Nexen tires and Eibach suspension dialed in perfectly. I just missed it in qualifying – the car should have been way better than 22nd. Being that far down in the order means you get difficult competition, like Mike Essa, and you have to work really hard to beat him. And then Cyrus just plowed into us.”

The Top-8 bracket lined Mohan up against Rhys Millen, who defeated Mohan in the top-16 at Palm Beach International Raceway. Mohan did not want to allow Millen to have any advantage and threw the Nexen / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8 into the bank while chasing Millen, staying so close to Millen through the run that he was nearly lost in the smoke until the end of the Power Alley when Mohan went off line.

“I knew after competing against Rhys and watching how his car worked that the only way to have a chance against him was to be really, really aggressive,” said Mohan. “I think I had a shot at it but I drove in too deep into the power alley and went offline and Rhys got an advantage, and I think that’s what did it.  The steering rack wasn’t quite right after the hit with Cyrus but the car was still really good. I’m really happy with how the car performed this weekend.”

The result moves Mohan to tenth in the Formula Drift Pro Championship at 266 points.  The next Formula Drift event, After Dark at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be August 26-27. Mohan advanced to the top-16 in the 2010 event after qualifying a career-best second.

Over the past year we have been battling it out with the big three energy drink brands. One thing that we learned is “we small guys can’t compete head to head with these guys” because they themselves are battling amongst each other. What do we mean by that? Well for instance, Monster and Rockstar, as recent as 18 months ago were sold in most markets for 2 – 16oz cans for $4.00 or singles for anywhere from $1.99 to $2.49 per can. Because of distributor changes and a good majority of their volume being sold through Coke or Pepsi distributors there has been a battle for increased market share. That being said the battle has begun and the brands sold by Coke and Pepsi are now selling everyday for 2 – 16oz cans for $3.00 in most convenience stores and in some grocery accounts we’ve seen 0.99 cents or 10/$10, but you have to buy 10 cans. So what used to be a great deal on Spider Energy Drink of 2 – 16oz cans for $3.00 doesn’t seem to be that great of a deal any longer. So what does a small independent, privately owned energy drink company do? We do what’s right and we offer a HIGH QUALITY product at a great price! No HFC’s, Twice the B-Vitamins and more caffeine than the major brands leading products. The new Spider Energy 16oz / $0.99 cent cans will be available beginning May 2011. Remember, we don’t pay million dollar sponsorships and endorsements. We don’t pay for shelf space and we barley pay ourselves. Fortunately our overhead is low and we have a nice base of business to help keep the lights on.
