Spider Energy was one of the best energy drinks to have been unleashed in 2009. With all the functional waters, relaxation drinks and liquids loaded with tea based antioxidant rich dentist certified Woo Science ingredients to make you bleed less, stop aging and gain superhuman invulnerability, it is nice to find a drink that is all an energy drink is supposed to be. A kick ass caffeinated ride in a cool can.

The Masters of Beverages (yes, that is really the company’s name) is still sticking to a nice simple formula, pitting their awesomeness against all the big boys of extreme energy drink-ness. Fortunately for them, Lighter Spider, like the original Spider Energy is a truly rockin’ drink! They did about everything right with this gem, and seem to know what they are doing to get it popular. I just hope it is enough to get a toe hold and stick around.

Taste:9
When I first took a drink of lighter spider, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for a direct port of their original flavor, a delicious orange taste. It has been replaced by a new flavor, which is really just as good, just not what I was expecting. Once I came to grips that the old orange flavor was gone, I began to enjoy the new Citrus flavor.
This is not just a particular citrus flavor, like a lemon-lime or grapefruit drink, but a much more complex general citrus taste. While it would be easy to ascribe this to the citric acid, there is so much more flavor. It tasted very unique and delicious, a refreshing mix of the lemon bite and a touch of tangerine juiciness. There was no bitterness or harshness, and was incredibly easy to chug – even warm. The flavor works incredibly well when you are hot or fatigued – perking up your taste buds before the caffeine has any time to do it’s job. I think it tastes most like a citrus Sweet Tart candy – sour and sweet and yummy tot he very end. The lightness of the sugar free variety and the high carbonation keep this drink very light and airy.

Buzz: 10
And what a caffeinated rush too! Expect hours and hours of joy out of this one. This is guaranteed to give you the energy you are looking for. There is a very serious 240mg of caffeine in the sixteen ounce can, one and a half times the amount found in the usual Red Bull/Monster drinks out there. When you add in the carnitine, glutamine, Taurine, ginseng and B vitamins, not to mention the 200mg of guarana, the caffeine content goes even higher and the buzz is even more impressive. This time out there is no sugar to bite you in the ass and give you a crash, but do expect some jitters if you knock this can back quickly. This is sweetened with a sucralose/Ace-K mix that works perfectly with the flavor to provide ample sweetness. Fortunately, this is even all listed on the can, so it is easy to see how much of what ingredients you are ingesting.

Packaging:8
And that is not the only thing they got right with the packaging, as everything else is spot on the nose. Like this drink’s older fatter brother, I would definitely feel comfortable drinking this at a metal concert or hanging out with the goth kids. There is enough grunginess to make it acceptable at the local skate park, as well as most other teen alterna-hangouts. The slogan change (from “get bit, stay lit” to “get bit, stay fit”) works well,as well as their marketing slogan and general Xtreme coolness.

The lid on all 3 cans I was sent were facing the correct direction, which is a change from last go around. The design is still top notch and the printing job is just beautiful. The only small caveat is there is no double facing on the can, so stockers spend less time facing the drinks in the cooler.

Overall, the worst thing about the drink is that I can’t find this near me yet. Once they infect everywhere, the big boys might have some worries. Until then, I am hanging on to these few treasures I have left!

Lighter Spider – Sugar Free

Ok so I really enjoyed the original Spider energy drink a while back. It was potent and delicious and was set to take on the mainstream market dominated by the like of Monster, Red Bull, and Rockstar. The only thing missing was a sugar free version. Lots of people are watching their sugar intake now days so you need to provide that option to gain in the energy drink market. Then along came a Lighter Spider

Packaging: The Lighter Spider can is just as awesome as the original. The colors are lighter to denote it as sugar free but the graphics and fonts are just as aggressive and cool. I like how the sugar free is printed clearly on the front. Sometimes people don’t make it obvious that a drink is sugar free and that is a mistake I think. Lighter Spider does not make that mistake. Great can. Grade B+

Slogan: “Get Bit Stay Fit” is clearly there on the can. I like how it is almost identical to the original Spider slogan and yet lets you know it is a sugar free drink. Cool drink specific slogan. Grade A

Taste: I open the can with a pssst and get a nice natural orange scent. Pouring it in a cup it comes out an orangish yellow. I take a sip and I get a not overly sweet orange flavor with a hint on citrus at the finish. This drink has a lot of carbonation. It is one of those sugar free drinks that does not overdo it on the artificial sweetener. They seem to have it at just the right level so the orange has a more natural taste to it. There is no bitterness or after taste to speak of.  I think they nailed the sugar free version of Spider pretty well here. Grade B

Kick/Ingredients: Well after drinking downing this Lighter Spider it hit me pretty quick. This is no brown recluse that sneaks up on you this is more like a Brazilian wandering spider in that it is fast and deadly. I was jacked up good and had the jitters to prove it. It is rare when a sugar free drink gives me any jitters. I was bouncing all over the place and in a great and talkative mood. The rest of my afternoon seemed to fly by. I got a solid  4 hours of energy and there was no crash at the end.  The line up of ingredients is typical  but it is a potent one consisting of the following per can. Caffeine 240 mgTaurine 2000 mg, Ginseng 200 mg, Guarana 200 mg, L-CarnitineL-Glutamine, and B vitamins in the 200 to 500 % DV range (higher than most). You get this with 0 calories and 0 grams of sugar and carbs. It is sweetened sucralose and Ace K. Grade B for kick/ingredients

Web Presence: Spider energy has really sunk it’s fangs into web presence with to options.  They have spiderenergy.com which is looking pretty good with product info, a store, a cool bartending video set, and more. Then they have getbitstaylit.com which is their blog. To top that off they have Myspace, and Twitter wrapped up.  I’m giving them a grade of B

Recap:

  • Packaging  B+
  • Slogan A
  • Taste B
  • Kick/Ingredients B
  • Web Presence B

Like I said about the original Spider. This one can hold it’s on against the big boys. It comes in a cool aggressive can, offers a great taste, and delivers a more potent caffeine kick. If you see this in the cooler next to a Monster or a Rockstar you would be well served grabbing the Lighter Spider instead. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

SPIDER ENERGY

Today I will be taking on the sugar version of Spider Energy.  I was left very impressed with the brand when I reviewed Lighter Spider, so I am hoping I have the same great experience this time.

The Look: The can design is the same as Lighter Spider for the most part.  Spider Energy has a different color scheme, they used orange this time instead of yellow.  Also the slogan on the top of the can is slightly different: “Get Bit, Stay Lit”.  That is how you do a slogan, it is specific to the drink and it just all out kicks ass.  On the back there is a nice passage about the company and the usual nutritional information.  Great can that other companies should take notes on. (Nice graphic, great slogan, good color scheme, and the caffeine is listed)

(9.5 out of 10)

Taste: Spider Energy has a great orange soda type of taste.  If you mixed orange soda with a little added citrus you would get Spider Energy.  There is no caffeine taste present and no aftertaste.  Another great energy drink that blurs the taste line between soda and energy drink.

(8.5 out of 10)

Does It Work: Spider Energy comes at you with 220 calories, 54 g of sugar, a big handful of B vitamins, 240 mg of caffeine (I bolded that for a reason, that is very nice), taurine, ginseng, guarana, and a good number of other ingredients.  This did more than just woke me up, this jump started me this morning.  After drinking down the can I had a great buzz that lasted well into the afternoon with no crash.

(9 out of 10)

Overall Thoughts: I cannot think of anything bad to say about the Spider Energy drinks.  The look is great, the slogan fits perfectly, the taste is wonderful, and the kick is above average.  You can check them out on the web at:Spider Energy.  Both of the drinks in the Spider lineup get my recommendation.  A big thanks goes out to my friend at EDJunkie.com for helping me discovering such a great product.
